Maine Coon cats are a majestic breed known for their large size, bushy tails, and tufted ears. If you are fortunate enough to share your home with one of these beautiful creatures, it's essential to understand the proper grooming and care techniques to keep them healthy and happy. Here are some top tips for grooming and caring for Maine Coon cats:

  1. Regular Brushing: Maine Coons have a thick, water-repellent coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting and hairballs. Invest in a high-quality brush or comb and make a habit of brushing your cat a few times a week to remove loose fur and prevent tangles. We use "Furminator long hair deshedding tool" for cats.

  2. Nail Trimming: Like all cats, Maine Coons need their nails trimmed regularly to prevent them from becoming overgrown and causing discomfort. Use a pair of cat nail clippers and take care not to cut the quick, which can cause bleeding and pain. We use one with an LED light to better see the quick line. A good way to trim their nails is with two people; one to wrap the kitty in a blanket and brace behind the elbow while the other person trims the nail. If you would like to learn this technique we can demonstrate it at kitten pick up.

  3. Ear Cleaning: Maine Coon cats are prone to wax buildup in their ears, so it's essential to clean them regularly with a gentle ear cleaning solution and cotton balls. Be sure not to insert anything into the ear canal and consult your vet if you notice any unusual discharge or odor.

  4. Dental Care: Just like humans, cats need regular dental care to prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Brush your Maine Coon's teeth regularly with a cat-specific toothbrush and toothpaste to keep their mouth healthy.

  5. Proper Nutrition: Maine Coons are known for their hearty appetites, so it's crucial to feed them a high-quality diet that meets their nutritional needs. Look for a cat food specifically formulated for large breeds. We currently use Nulo and Instinct for its high percent of protein and fats.

  6. Regular Vet Check-ups: To ensure your Maine Coon stays healthy and happy, schedule regular check-ups with your vet. We are always available for breeder support with any questions you may have. By following these grooming and care tips, you can help your Maine Coon cat live a long, healthy life full of love and companionship. Remember, each cat is unique, so be sure to tailor your grooming and care routine to fit your feline friend's individual needs.
